SF Pros and Cons
Why didn’t I blog earlier (for all two of you who have been breathlessly waiting?) Well, aside from work and Internet issues, last weekend I went to Gaylaxicon. I’ve never been to a SF con for more than an hour before this. And for those of you who do go, it’s OK. Loose Id has other partners who do that kind of thing.
Based on this very limited sample I’ve learned:
--No matter how close you live to a con, unless it’s about twenty minutes away, stay at a hotel in or near the activities. I freely admit I missed a lot because of the travel time.
--SF cons that cater to those interested in GBLT will attract a crowd that is almost all male. It’s been awhile since I’ve attended places with anywhere near that kind of ratio of male to female, so that was an experience. But at least four females there were LI authors.
--This was not a crowd interested in cross-genre that included romance. I learned more about speculative literature and fanfic and the people that love them than I knew before, though. [M notes that this is why she pushes erotica at cons. However they didn’t even seem wildly interested in panels that promised to discuss kink. Maybe they’re too innocent? Maybe SF can’t deliver enough kink?]
